Last weekend, I met up with some members from Drink and Click Austin. There are chapters of this group across the US. Normally, they meet at a bar, and photograph models. However, COVID-19 is preventing these types of meet-ups, and I’m okay with it. Well, one of the members suggested meeting early on a Saturday in downtown Austin for street photography. I was game because I needed to get out of the apartment, and I wanted to practice some more with my new camera.
I was the only woman photographer present, but the guys made me feel very comfortable. I’m still not 100% in knowing my way around, but we met at The Driskill Hotel. If you’re ever in Austin, you must go inside of this hotel. It is beautiful. Anyway, once everyone was there, we started walking south on Brazos toward 6th Street. There was a surreal feeling walking around. The streets were basically deserted. There were very few cars driving down the street which afforded us the opportunity to stand in the middle of the street to get images. I was inspired to bring a model to this location for a session.
There were a lot of murals with inspirational messages. My primary focus was capturing them. Who knows if they will be there when things get back to “normal”. I spent an hour photographing the area that we walked in before returning home. I have to say that I did very little editing to my images. I really do like shooting with the Sony A7iii.
