I belong to local photography group that consists only of women. The members are models, photographers, makeup artists. The group was started as a safe space for women creatives because of prior bad experiences with male photographers. I was a member before leaving the Phoenix area. Since then, there are groups literally all over the world. When I returned to Phoenix last year, I rejoined the group. I’ve been lurking in the background of the group until a recent post. The first group event of the year was a Barbie-themed photo session in celebration of a member’s birthday. I signed up to attend the event hoping that it would help me return behind the camera.
The event was held at Papago Park in Phoenix on a Sunday evening. Initially, I was going to change my RSVP because the AFC Championship was at the same time. I realized that I was using it as an excuse not to attend so I recorded the game.
When I arrived, there were more photographers than models which isn’t unusually. I traveled light in terms of gear because I wanted to travel light. I also wanted to practice using my speedlight.
My first model was the birthday girl. I spent the most time with her. After that, I only photographed two additional models. I’m happy with my participation. It was a great way to get my feet wet, and to work with new models. Here’s to more participation in the future.
