It’s always interesting to photograph someone for the first time. You wonder if you the two of you will connect, and create images that you both want to share. I use this energy to fuel myself during a photo session, and it never fails me.
Two weeks ago, I put out a model call for a casual photo shoot. A couple of models responded, but Sophia was the only who seemed really interested in the theme that I wanted to capture. The theme was casual chic, and we agreed to meet at The Arboretum. I’ve photographed other models in this location, but I always seem to find new little nooks to use as the backdrop.
We met on a Sunday afternoon which was big for me because Sunday is football. All day. However, I really wanted to get behind my camera. I created a mood board for the session, and Sophia used that to put together looks from her own closet. I love it when a model collaborates with me! It makes things a lot easier.
I arrived about 15 minutes early to scope out the area. Even if I’ve shot in an area for another shoot, I always look around for different areas. I try to match the backdrop with the theme of the session. I look for areas that may not seem useable, but I like to make them work. Sophia and her boyfriend arrived about 15 minutes later. As a photographer, I don’t mind if a model brings someone with them especially if this is the first time that we’ve worked together. I want the model to feel comfortable. We settled on three different looks. During the session, her boyfriend told me that Sophia liked Audrey Hepburn. Learning things like this about the model, helps me to provide points of reference to use as queues. This is particularly helpful if we’re in an area where I cannot play music.
I do have to share that I’m nervous about shooting in public. I feel that everyone is watching me. It can be very nerve racking! I’m learning that people will be curious, but they quickly move on. Some may stop and watch. I cannot let that stop me from getting my shot. I was very pleased with how I worked with Sophia to get our shots.
