Here in the Valley there’s an annual photography event that creatives look forward to attending. It’s called the Junkyard Photo Shoot, and it’s an all-day event. Photographers, models, stylists, and makeup artists venture to Wittman, AZ to create art. In the past, I attended the event for specific purposes – practice lighting, create art, and building my portfolio. My purpose for this year was to get out of the apartment. I wanted to create images, but I wanted to socialize as well.
The women’s group that I belong to scheduled an event called “Gowns in the Junkyard” for the morning of the junkyard session. The models who participated wore different colored gowns, and the photographers took group as well as individual shots.
After this session, I photographed three of the women from the “Gowns” session. One had the cute idea of sitting on a broken toilet while reading her cell phone. It was a comical commentary on our society today.
My original plan was to only stay for about three hours, but I was inspired to photograph the women who were present. They all owned their looks, and they’re strength was evident. They all represented exactly what my brand stands for – women celebrating their journeys.
