As women, we’re usually taking care of someone else, and with that comes a title. We’re mom, daughter, wife, or significant other. Oftentimes, we lose ourselves in those pronouns. When do we get to be ourselves? When do we get to celebrate our dreams, feelings, and beauty?
Over the last year, I found myself lost to the title of “caregiver”. Where did I go? Who was I beyond making appointments, running errands, and working full-time? I found myself celebrating the beauty of other women through my work. I caught small glimpses of me. During the sessions, I would encourage the women to give themselves a huge hug. I would play their favorite music, and get them to laugh. By the end of each session, each woman told me how much fun that she had. My job was done. For that time, she wasn’t a pronoun.
Earlier this month, I did the same thing for myself. I styled my hair so that it was free. I put on a full face of makeup not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I put on the dress that I rented. My mother-in-law and I went to a local park for the session. I sought out a spot with plenty of sun, and set-up my tripod. I captured several frames to celebrate not the caregiver, but Tina. Introverted, compassionate, funny, and loving Tina.
I want every woman who steps in front of my camera to find herself again. Trust my process, and I guarantee that you’ll have a blast.
