When I arrived in the Austin, Texas area, one of the first things that I did was join a couple of local photography groups. I wanted to tap into the creative scene, build a community, and locate different areas for sessions. One place that was constantly mentioned was the Sekrit Theater. I saw the words “inspiring”, “gorgeous”, and “unlimited photo opportunities”. I knew that I had to visit this place.
One day, my husband and I travel to the location. Having not been in the Austin area for a long time, we had no idea how far we had to travel to each the Sekrit Theater. It took us about twenty minutes to get there. It’s in a residential area, and we almost passed it! Once we located the theater, we discovered that you could not tour the place. To see the grounds, you had to schedule a session or event. It wasn’t a total loss. We found a restaurant and made it a day date.
When I arrived home, I searched social media for more images of the theater. I learned that it was not only used for photo sessions, but also movies, engagements, and weddings.
It would be almost a year before I scheduled a session at the theater. It was a Time for Print session with a model that I had worked with once before. Her gown as perfect for the look that I wanted to capture. It was elegant, and full of drama. We started at the green house and moved to several other areas around the grounds. There are so many amazing areas at the Sekrit Theater that you could literally create a different look for every photo session!
I also enjoy holding sessions at the Sekrit Theater because you’re the only photographer at your scheduled time. You have the entire place to yourself! The owners don’t bother you, but you do have to clean up after yourself if you make a mess.
The only downside is that it’s extremely difficult to conduct a session during the Texas summers. The humidity can be too much to bear. I typically don’t schedule sessions between the months of May – October not only due to the extreme temperatures, but also because of the mosquitos.
Here are a few images of my first session at the Sekrit Theater. They will always hold a special meaning for me.
