In May, the business “Selfie World” opened in Round Rock, Texas. It’s a business with at least 10 different scenes where you can take selfies, or hold photography sessions, and they’re popping up all over the US. Bloggers like it because it they’re provided with several different scenses to create content for their social media platforms. For photographers, it’s an indoor studio without the overhead if you like the set-ups. I wanted to try it out for several reasons. The first being that I had a suit that I really wanted to photograph. Second, I had a velvet suit that I wanted to capture, and I wasn’t keen on shooting outside. Lastly, I needed to get someone in front of my camera.
I posted a call for a Time for Print Session, and I specifically requested a Black Model with natural hair. Feliziana responded to my post. She’s a relatively new model, but she had the look that I wanted for the session. I sent her the contract, and we decided upon a date. I paid for her entry fee, which was $20.00, into Selfie World. I provided her with an image of the suit, the makeup style, and how I wanted her to wear her hair.
We met on a Saturday morning. The entry fee allows you an hour to shoot. You aren’t confined to using one of the set-ups. You’re given a ring light on a stand to use. Feliziana and I used 6 of the set-ups. There were some that weren’t to my liking. We finished within the allotted time, and I was pretty happy with the images.
One of the downsides to using selfie-world is that there is overhead lighting which can cast shadows on your face. Although the ring lights are provided, they light emitted from them isn’t powerful. Because it isn’t a formal photography studio, a professional photographer cannot bring his/her lights. Would I return? Yes, but only after the scenes are changed which occurs every quarter.
